There are only a few key things that you actually need to get for your new baby when you bring them into your home. They will need somewhere to sleep, some clothing to wear and something to bathe in. Other that this all of your attention will be geared towards your new child’s safety and so all other items will be on the periphery.

The first thing you need to consider is where you baby will sleep. This is something that you need to put some thought into and you should look to fill a number of different criteria when making your choice. You should look for nothing too flashy, just a functional and practical crib. It should have a mattress that is soft and thin and that fits well into the crib and that is covered by a cotton sheet.

You must make sure that there is no pillow or any sort of cushions as these can prevent the air from circulating properly which can lead to the baby over-heating which can prove fatal. For coverings, use cotton blankets and make sure that they do not have any loose threads hanging off as these can prove to be a choking hazard, particularly as the child get older.

When you out your baby to bed make sure that they are on their back. Keep a lose eye on them using a summer baby monitor or something similar that allows you to see and hear your baby whenever you are not around.

In terms of clothing, do not concern yourself with anything fashionable as this is purely vanity on the parents part since the child will have no idea what it is wearing. Go for clothes that are safe and comfortable instead, as these should be your primary considerations. Soft machine washable fabrics are good, and try to get hold of cotton clothing ahead of wool or synthetics. This will prove less likely to irritate the baby’s skin.

For bathing the baby, it is quite legitimate to wash them in the sink in the early days. For a better alternative, look for baby baths that can attach to the side of the main tub. A spa baby is a very good product that allows the child to sit upright while being washed and is very safe. Look for product akin to this.

Have some baby bath towels on hand to dry the child when you are done. For travelling, also look to get a car seat for the car.
